What is Pain?

  • Pain is an unpleasant experience that acts as a warning signal that something is wrong with the body.
  • Pain is caused by injury or repetitive stress to a certain part of the body. It is a complex process and is controlled by the nervous system.
  • Pain is important because it serves as a protective mechanism to ensure that no further harm is caused and to allow us to take the steps required to solve the problem.
  • The most common type of pain is of soft tissue origin (muscles, tendons, ligaments)
  • Muscles work in functional groups to move or stabilize the body. When a muscle fails, the functional muscle group compensates for the dysfunction which often leads to muscle pain.
  • Muscle pain can be puzzling as it can be perceived at a location different from the source. This is known as referred pain.
